Transforming the Nation, One School at a Time

School might have been out for the summer, but for 3,000 Fidelity employees, it was time to transform 11 middle schools across the U.S.

Beginning last spring, Fidelity partnered with HandsOn Network, the volunteer-focused arm of Points of Light Institute and the largest volunteer network in the nation, for a pilot program aimed at revitalizing the learning environment of one middle school within each of Fidelity's 11 markets nationwide.

Kicking off in Nashua, N.H., on July 25 and concluding on Sept. 11 in New York, Fidelity employees worked with a local HandsOn affiliate to execute projects chosen by each school's teachers, students, administrators, parents and community leaders, as well as the Fidelity volunteers themselves. From college career zones and teacher resource rooms to science labs, amphitheaters and outdoor classrooms, each school's projects were as unique as the states themselves.

"Our goal from the beginning was to bring a renewed energy and enthusiasm to the middle school students and help them make a successful transition to high school and, ultimately, to graduation," said Sheila Cavanaugh, senior vice president of Community Relations. "It was inspiring to see so many Fidelity employees devoting their time, talents and energy to making these projects truly transformative, and letting the children at these schools know they matter."
