Introduction

Today’s youth face immediate challenges to their development, sense of community, health and overall security. Many come from families struggling to meet the challenges of day-to-day living. The feel-good, live-for-self attitudes perpetuated by the media often leave young people vulnerable to irresponsible, self-destructive behaviors. Disparities in educational systems do not equip all young people with the knowledge and skills they need to become successful, productive adults.

In spite of these tremendous challenges, today’s youth grow up in communities, learn early on how communities work and undoubtedly have visions for their communities.

As such, let us explore how the visions, leadership, energies and talents of young people can help advance communities. How can young people help reignite the idealism, hope and energy necessary for social change? How can they let their voices be heard, broaden democratic access and ensure community progress?

Explore this section to learn more about youth, the issues impacting them and how we can equip youth from all life paths to embrace the important roles they can play in their communities.
