The McComber Family
After losing their home to a wildfire, the McComber family decided to use this challenge as an opportunity to rebuild an eco-friendly home that is both fire-safe and resource-efficient. AmeriCorps volunteers from Volunteer San Diego, an affiliate of HandsOn Network, pitched in to help.
The AmeriCorps team ensured that the new home site had the required amount of defensible space to help protect them in the event of another fire. After completing the work, the AmeriCorps members received an unexpected gift: the McCombers and their contractor generously gave their time to explain to the volunteers how they were attempting to reach LEED Platinum status with their new home.
Through their service, AmeriCorps team received an impromptu education in the latest green building technologies and the various industries that are working to implement them.
