Governor Arnold Schwarzenegger proclaims the California Day of Service to commemorate the National Day of Service and Remembrance

Governor Arnold Schwarzenegger joined Secretary for Service and Volunteering Karen Baker to commemorate the National Day of Service and Remembrance and proclaim the California Day of Service, created to strengthen communities across the state and to remember those who passed on September 11, 2001.

“Today, Maria and I join all Californians as we remember those who lost their lives and honor them by answering our new call to service. Together, we must renew our continued commitment to serve and pledge to bring a positive change to our communities. Our hearts are with all Americans as we remember that fateful day and our thoughts and prayers are with the victims and their families,” Governor Schwarzenegger said.

Last year, Governor Schwarzenegger took several key steps to elevate service in California, including his decision to create the first state cabinet post dedicated to service and volunteering, CaliforniaVolunteers. CaliforniaVolunteers, led by Secretary Karen Baker, launched a variety of programs to support non-profit organizations and increase volunteerism in the state.

First Lady Maria Shriver serves as the honorary chair of CaliforniaVolunteers and has participated in a variety of service initiatives. She has led the construction of 31 new playgrounds, including one with in San Francisco during the National Conference on Volunteering and Service in June.
