Points of Light Institute/HandsOn Network with New Orleans Mayor Landrieu Announce Critical Support for Gulf Coast

As millions of Americans bear the brunt of one of the nation's worst-ever environmental disasters, Points of Light Institute/HandsOn Network CEO Michelle Nunn and New Orleans Mayor Mitch Landrieu announced today in New York that the world's largest gathering of service and volunteer leaders will hold its 2011 conference in New Orleans. With the Gulf Coast reeling from its second economic blow in five years, Patrick Corvington, CEO of the Corporation for National and Community Service, and Michelle Nunn, CEO of Points of Light Institute and Co-Founder of HandsOn Network, declared that the region's largest city was not just the natural choice to host the 2011 gathering - it was the only choice. Not only is the Gulf Coast once again front-and-center for America's volunteer and service community because of the BP oil spill, but both conference conveners already have a strong presence there due to recovery efforts from Hurricane Katrina.

Leading up to the 2011 conference, HandsOn Network will recruit and train 10,000 volunteer leaders and mobilize tens of thousands of volunteers to devote an expected 1 million hours to support the region's environmental and economic recovery. In addition, HandsOn will conduct a series of on-the-ground and virtual "boot camps" to train volunteer leaders to manage others and develop projects to meet community-specific needs.
