Session Title: Engaging Low Income Communities in MLK Day of Service: The Neighboring Model
Date: November 3, 2009
Time: 2:00 - 3:30 pm ET
Presenter: Khyati Desai, Civic Engagement Manager, Points of Light Institute
Session Description: Learn from past MLK grantees and Neighboring sites on how you can create MLK Day service projects that ensure resident engagement, community buy-in and opportunities for continued engagement beyond MLK Day. Neighboring is a way of volunteering that sees the community as an asset and views community members as providers of service not just recipients. It is an empowerment-based approach to volunteering that engages underserved and low-income families and residents as volunteers and volunteer leaders to identify challenges they face and come up with creative solutions to address those challenges in order to strengthen their communities.
Learning objectives:
Upon completion of this session, participants will be able to:
- state why community residents should be engaged in MLK Day;
- identify ways residents can be engaged in MLK Day;
- solve potential challenges based on peer experiences; and
