Make the Holidays Matter

This December, we challenge you to reach outside of your normal commemoration of the holidays and incorporate some of these acts of kindness to create new traditions for yourself and your family. If it is difficult for you to find time to participate in a scheduled service project with an organization, consider completing one of these activities to make the holidays a little bit brighter for someone less fortunate. These actions can also set a great example for youth in your life, opening their minds to the joy of giving to others through service.

  1. Deck the Halls - Offer to decorate a nursing home, assisted living or rehabilitation center for the holidays.
  2. Grant A Wish - Contact a local organization that is hosting a "Wish Tree" or "Angel Tree" and purchase a gift from the tree.
  3. Shop - Next time you visit the grocery store, pick up extra canned goods or holiday meal items to donate to a food pantry.
  4. Support Utility Payment Assistance - Many families need extra help to keep lights and heat on during the cold winter months. Donate to a local agency that assists with utility payment needs.
  5. Bake Treats - Make a batch of your favorite holiday goodies for local first responders - police officers, firemen or nurses. You can also bake treats for neighbors or employees at a local non-profit organization.
  6. Donate. Make a monetary donation to help a charitable organization make ends meet this year.
  7. Commit to Serve - Make your New Year's Resolution a goal to serve a specific number of hours or participate in a certain number of projects with a local organization in 2010.

However you choose to do so, make this holiday season matter by giving your time, gifts or financial resources to others. Many thanks to HandsOn Asheville-Buncombe and United Way of Larimer County for providing some of these great ideas.
