Self Organizing - Visual Alphabet
Overview
Together, you and a group of friends can create a Visual Alphabet to stimulate and inspire others through art and education.
Supporting Organizations
- Schools
- Community centers
- YMCA, 4-H, Boys & Girls Clubs or other youth-serving organization
- Job fairs
Materials
- 2x2 canvases (quantity: 24+)
- You can add the letter to the canvas with the visual interpretation or
- Create several letter picture representations and paint the letter on a separate canvas.
- Acrylic or oil-based paints
- Paint brushes (small)
- Cups of water for cleaning brushes
- Paper towels
- Frames (frame the alphabet for a more polished artwork- frames will need to be at least 2 inches deep)
Instructions
- Identify a supporting organization that can accept your donation of canvases.
- Participants should make one Visual Alphabet each.
- Associate a simple image with each letter of the alphabet. For example, a picture of an apple can represent the letter “A.” Pictures should represent positive influences. They could relate to a specific topic based on the location, such as images of healthy foods to hang in a school cafeteria.
- Paint the images on the canvases. Limit the amount of black paint used.
- Add the letter to the canvas in black paint. This will help the letters stand out.
- Either glue canvases in the frames or provide small nails with at flat head for hanging the canvases on a wall.
