Self Organizing - Visual Alphabet

Overview
Together, you and a group of friends can create a Visual Alphabet to stimulate and inspire others through art and education.

Supporting Organizations

  • Schools
  • Community centers
  • YMCA, 4-H, Boys & Girls Clubs or other youth-serving organization
  • Job fairs

Materials

  • 2x2 canvases (quantity: 24+)
    • You can add the letter to the canvas with the visual interpretation or
    • Create several letter picture representations and paint the letter on a separate canvas.
  • Acrylic or oil-based paints
  • Paint brushes (small)
  • Cups of water for cleaning brushes
  • Paper towels
  • Frames (frame the alphabet for a more polished artwork- frames will need to be at least 2 inches deep)

Instructions

  • Identify a supporting organization that can accept your donation of canvases.
  • Participants should make one Visual Alphabet each.
  • Associate a simple image with each letter of the alphabet. For example, a picture of an apple can represent the letter “A.” Pictures should represent positive influences. They could relate to a specific topic based on the location, such as images of healthy foods to hang in a school cafeteria.
  • Paint the images on the canvases. Limit the amount of black paint used.
  • Add the letter to the canvas in black paint. This will help the letters stand out.
  • Either glue canvases in the frames or provide small nails with at flat head for hanging the canvases on a wall.
