Self Organizing - Share the Light

Self Organizing - Share the Light

Overview
In the average U.S. home, lighting accounts for approximately 20% of the electric bill. Americans can save money and protect the environment by installing ENERGY STAR qualified lighting.  You can support this positive trend by purchasing lights for your street or block.  You could also replace all of the outside lights of a school or church.

Supporting Organizations

  • LED organizations
  • Local nonprofits
  • Schools
  • Faith-based organizations (e.g., church, synagogue, temple)

Materials

  • Energy efficient light bulbs
  • Information about energy conservation and energy efficient bulbs, appliances, etc.

Instructions

  • Identify an organization where you can provide service replacing light bulbs.
  • Determine how many light bulbs you can replace.
  • Purchase the appropriate amount of light bulbs or ask individuals or businesses to donate them. You could even organize a “Share the Light” collection drive.
  • Draw up a flyer stating why you are doing what you are doing. Add energy saving facts and tips.  Give these flyers to the service recipients.

NOTE: One idea for reaching more people with this project is to hand out one bulb along with educational information. You could do this along your street, in your subdivision, at a community event, etc.

Reflection
After your volunteer project, it is important to reflect on the experience – to think about what you did, what you learned from it and the impact it had. Here are some suggested activities:

  • Tell your family and friends about something you learned and if/how you will continue to help others.
  • Draw a picture, write a poem or create a jingle about the service activity.
  • Write about your experience on your blog, FaceBook or Twitter.
  • Write a letter to the editor to discuss your experience and encourage others to serve.
  • If you’re working with a group of volunteers to do this project, lead a group discussion with questions such as:
    • Why did you volunteer today?
    • What did you learn about the environment, energy conservation, or helping others?
    • What is one thing you will remember most about this service activity?
    • How can you continue to make a difference in our community?
