“Friendly” Inter-Network Competition: United We Serve

Bob Young, Associate Director at Hands On Charlotte (HOC), was impressed when he received his weekly newsletter from Boston Cares on July 1.

“I looked it over and thought Patrice [Keegan] and her staff did a great job in putting together a model that not only highlighted their volunteer opportunities, but challenged people to go further — by training to be a project leader or by developing their own project — which fits not only the goals of the national United We Serve campaign, but the Network’s mission to inspire, equip and mobilize,” he said.

His reaction? “I was jealous and decided that we should steal their idea.” So Bob and the staff at Hands On Charlotte got to work on a challenge to its volunteers to meet and exceed the goals laid out by Consulting Executive Director Lisa Quisenberry of Boston Cares: 2,000 hours of volunteer service pledged by Sept. 11, 2009.

While Bob is optimistic about meeting these goals, he won’t be disappointed if HOC loses the competition against Boston.

“Boston Cares may be twice HOC’s size, but we’re feisty and think we can hold our own against them. Even if we can’t, we’ll have generated more awareness and interest — and volunteers — than we would have otherwise.” Watch out Boston Cares: Hands On Charlotte just launched it’s challenge on July 8 and already has 250 hours pledged!
